Beginner Guitar Training 101
If you have absolutely no idea what you are doing when it comes to playing the guitar, you are in the right place! This free lesson guide will get you started from scratch, and teach you what you need to know in order to begin playing the guitar. I won't sugar coat it though, learning to play can be extremely challenging and frustrating in the beginning. Have patience with yourself and take pride in the little victories along the way.
1. Know Your Instrument
You must first know a few basic terms and become familiar with the parts of the guitar. Study the diagram below to learn the basic parts of your instrument.
2. Tuning Your Guitar
Tuning your guitar is one of the most important skills to learn in the beginning. It pretty much goes without saying, but if you're out of tune you will find it nearly impossible to learn to play anything correctly. The following video and tuning guide will help you learn to tune your guitar. Once again, be patient with yourself. Learning to tune takes time.
3. Basic Movement of the Hands
Before you try to play anything on the guitar, you will need to develop a feeling for what your hands will be doing. The following videos will provide simple exercises to get your hands moving and provide a basic understanding of producing sound on the instrument.
4. Reading Tablature
Tablature is a system of reading music designed specifically for the guitar. It is meant to serve as a shortcut alternative to reading standard notation. Learning to read tablature can be accomplished in significantly less time than it takes to learn to read standard music notation. The following overview and exercises will get you reading basic tablature in no time, which will prepare you for playing exercises and songs.
5. Open Chords
Playing chords is something you will surely want to start right away. Chords are used in the majority of songs in all genres and can be a lot of fun to play. The term "open chords" refers to chords that involve the use of open strings. Open chords provide a wonderful introduction to playing chords on the guitar and can be used to play countless songs. The following chord lesson will walk you through the process of becoming familiar with playing chords.
6. Your First Practice Routine
Once you become familiar with the basic concepts above, you will be ready to start a regular practice routine. An efficient and consistent practice routine is the key to success in learning to play the guitar.
